Orthodontics

Briargate Dental Centers dental offices aims to identify jaw and tooth alignment issues early so that corrective orthodontic methods can be used before the issue becomes more invasive. We are often able to use appliances like braces, retainers, aligners, rubber bands and headgears to address alignment issues in children and teenagers, setting them up with a beautiful smile for a lifetime. We also offer orthodontic measures for adults who need jaw and tooth alignment.

When Orthodontics Become Necessary

There are a number of reasons why orthodontic treatments are needed. Teeth that are crooked, crowded, or overlapping can cause a bad bite, leading to many problems:

  • Tooth decay and gum disease
  • Excessive wear and tear
  • Jaw injuries
  • Speech impediments
  • Self-esteem issues

These issues may be diagnosed using several techniques: x-rays, photographs, and bite casting. Once Dr. Harrison has determined that there is a clear issue—whether it effects a patient’s future dental health or just his or her comfort level or confidence—it should usually be addressed as soon as possible. There are several orthodontic methods that may be used.

Orthodontic Treatment Options at Colorado Springs Dental Offices – Briargate Dental Centers

The three most common appliances used to correct bite issues are braces, elastics, and headgear.

Braces
Braces provide the greatest level of control over tooth alignment. Ceramic or metal brackets are glued to each tooth and then forced into place by the tension from a wire attached to each bracket. The tension has to be adjusted every few weeks in order for braces to be effective.

Elastics
Elastics, or rubber bands, are used to align the upper and lower jaw. Wearing the elastics correctly is important for the desired correction to succeed.

Headgear
Headgear may become necessary when extra tension is needed to move teeth into the correct position. Headgear is attached to the braces with elastics and is usually worn at night to avoid discomfort and embarrassment.

Risks of Orthodontic Treatment

As with most treatment plans, there are some risks associated with orthodontics. These include poor hygiene, relapse, and soft tissue injury. We provide our orthodontic patients with various strategies to combat these risks, though, including brushing and flossing techniques and mouth guards.
